AVC's women’s
softball team played against East Los Angeles College on the 16. With a win
against Moorpark College 5-4 on Feb. 14, AVC tried to increase their record to
7-2. East LA’s record was 6-5.
Nicole Peters
struggled through the first inning and only got one out and was replaced after
giving up four runs. Jessica Saldana pitched for AVC next. AVC scored one run
in the bottom of the second inning. East LA picked up two runs in the top of
the third inning. Stephanie Medina went to the plate with the bases loaded. She
had a chance to bring AVC back into the game. She found the pitch she liked and
hit a grand slam to left-center field to make the score 6-5. The crowd went
wild. Medina said, “It depends on the situation. I try and make good contact,
but home runs are a bonus.” The score was then 6-5. In the fourth inning,
Saldana injured her shoulder and was replaced by Brooke Farrell. Coach Vargas
commented on the seriousness of the injury, “She will be out two weeks.”
East LA put up
another four runs. AVC came back and took the lead with a six-run fifth inning.
Farrell, who plays third base, said, “Once everyone starts hitting, then
hitting becomes contagious.”
Mandy Dale also
contributed to scoring a run. “Hitting in the nine hole is an important role,
because I am like the second leadoff hitter.” Dale continued, “My contribution
is extremely important.” AVC took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning,
leading the game 11-10.
Michele Cannon
added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Before the game she
talked about her home run hitting ability. “I hit a home run in a game that was
cancelled due to bad light. I hope to hit a home run in today’s game.” Well,
she definitely hit a home run that counted. It increased the AVC lead to 12-10.
However, Farrell gave up a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.
AVC had another
opportunity to win the game. Jessica Perez reached second with a double. Dale
bunted Perez to third and reached first base. However, she came up limping. She
talked about the injury, “It hurt really badly. I felt that I needed to get up
so I could score the run.” Her toughness was a key moment in the game.
Breanne Farinas
came up with runners on first and third. She found the pitch that she was
looking for and stroked a double to left field. AVC won the game 13-12.
The win was huge
for the team. This was their fourth win in a row. AVC is now 7-2 while East LA
College falls to 6-6. Farrell picked up the win. She is now 2-1 on the season.
The next game is against Cerritos College at 1p.m. on Feb. 24.
