No. 2 seeded AVC went 1-1 in last weekend’s Oxnard Tournament, as they opened up their first preseason game with a 3-0 shutout victory against No. 3 seeded Sacramento City College.
Freshman forward Beatrice Giles of AVC highlighted the game racking up her first two collegiate goals, as she helped AVC to a 2-0 lead.
“She plays like she’s six-feet tall and she’s only five-foot two,” AVC head coach Jerry Stupar said.
AVC Freshman defensemen/midfielder Marisol Vite also scored her first collegiate goal — AVC out-shot its opponents 26-2.
“We came out very strong,” Stupar said. “The offense did their job … the defense minimized them to two shots.”
Breanna Dundes was the starting goalie for AVC and recorded one save to keep shut out. Stupar described his freshman players Carla Hager and Melissa Heredia as having “very solid defensive performances.”
Conversely, AVC fell to the No. 1 ranked, former state champions, Cerritos College 3-0. Cerritos scored its first goal on “stoppage time.” Stoppage time occurs when the game is stopped via injury. An extra minute was added to the standard 45 minutes half, which resulted in a 1-0 Cerritos halftime lead.
With the momentum in its favor, Cerritos took a commanding 3-0 lead, as they scored two quick goals to start the second half. AVC was out-shot in the game 16-3. Danielle Skidmore of AVC got the start of goalkeeper for this game as she posted 10 saves.
“They’re a top notch team,” Stupar said about Cerritos. “I thought we played well in the first half … and then we started the substitutions, we played the depth chart players.
AVC ends its preseason today against former AVC assistant coach Jimmie Avalos and his West L.A. Wildcats at 4 p.m. at Marauder Stadium.
