The first game of the regular season was against the Lancers fromPasadena City College. The Lancers already had a record of 2-0 meaning thatthis game was going to test the girls’ ability to play as a team.
Constant blocks from Pasadena along with missed hits and missed serves equaledtrouble for AVC. “We’re still working together and trying to find ourchemistry,” star player Allyson Lods said, “so errors are going to come.” This is understandable comingfrom a predominately freshmen team. The first set was lost, 25-19.
During the second set, AVC was able to tie the game 12-12. Pasadena wenton a run that cost AVC the set 25-14. “You never let teams get more than twopoints, that’s what we practice. Sometimes you do well and other you don’t,”said Head Coach Jane Cwayna.
At the beginning of the third set, there was an immediate difference inhow the women played. The Marauders “stopped missing serves, played with moreconfidence, started hitting the ball, and started doing the right things,”according to Cwayna. They went on to win 25-20.
AVC continued that confidence into the fourth set. There were a total oftwelve blocks, five more than the number of blocks in the previous game. TheMarauders were able to win this set 25-23.
AVC lost the fifth set 15-9, costing the game. “Fifth set was ourdownfall last year. We would have been .500. We played hard, lost the firsttwo, came back and won the next two. We should have pulled that one out. Itsays we’re pretty good for us to go 5 games,” said Cwayna.
